BlackBerry Storm OS 5.0.0.328 - Upgraded Clock Time Zones
Many times when I install updated software, the small obscure feature improvements jump out at me more than the major features and functionality. This phenomenon occurred recently when I upgraded my Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530 to the official 5.0.0.328 operating system release. If you need to update your Storm OS head to http://www.blackberry.com/storm/updates/ or use your BlackBerry Desktop Manager software (Mac or Windows). Oddly enough one of the new improvements that jumped out at me was - The Clock
Upon opening the Date/Time settings in the Options menu of the BlackBerry OS, I was pleasantly surprised to find a new setting - Auto Update Time Zone (screen shot below). Effectively, by setting this option to 'Yes,' the phone will automatically change the time on the phone as you enter or leave time zones. I know a lot of phones do this, but I've owned a number of Smartphones that DO NOT automatically update the time (Windows Mobile I'm talking to you). Having been a road warrior for much of my career, this has always been a sore subject for me as I power on my phone upon landing at an airport to a time on my phone that was not correct (relative to the time zone). Now the BlackBerry Storm is able to handle this task.
After setting up the Date/Time on my upgraded BlackBerry Storm, I decided to look at the Options available in the Clock application. I was pleasantly surprised to find a new Home Time Zone option (see below). Curious to know what this option does, I set it to Pacific Time.
Upon viewing the clock, the application now displays the time in my home time zone in the upper left corner of the screen while the current time zone is prominently displayed in the center of the screen. I find this to be a very useful combination of enhancements to a rather overlooked feature of the BlackBerry Storm OS. Thanks for the refinements RIM!
